In this article, Donaldio and Povoledo discuss Berlusconi’s resignation and the Italian public’s reaction to it. They state that the reason that Berlusconi was forced to step down was mainly due to the financial crisis in Europe. However, added to that are the scandals that Berlusconi created including his illegal activities and sexual relationships. Mario Monti is to replace Berlusconi in Parliament and there is much hope for his success and ability to revive the Italian economy. There are many austerity measures that must be taken in order to help the economy and it is in a very bad state. The Italian public had mixed reactions to Berlusconi’s resignation but most were positive, eager for a new leader. Donaldio and Povoledo write for the New York Times, which is a very trusted source and not very biased. This article is very similar to other articles discussing the reasons for Berlusconi’s resignation and the Italian public’s reaction to his resignation.
